Short answer: moving to Miami from California — moving from California to Miami: what actually changes — changes your tax life more than your rent life. On US$150,000 of taxable income, a single filer pays about US$10,389 a year in California income tax and US$0 in Florida; at US$300,000 the California bill is about US$24,339, and California also taxes capital gains as ordinary income, up to 13.3%. Gas drops from US$6.39 a gallon, the highest in the country, to about US$4.08 in Florida. But rent barely moves if you come from Los Angeles — US$2,748 median listed there vs. US$2,600 in the Miami metro — and if you own, California’s low property tax is the one line that gets worse. What actually changes depends on where in California you start, and this page runs both versions honestly.

Moving to Miami from California: the income tax line, in real numbers
California runs the steepest graduated income tax in the country: 1% to 12.3%, plus a 1% surcharge on taxable income over US$1 million, for a 13.3% top rate. Florida’s rate is zero — no tax on wages, pensions, Social Security, IRA withdrawals or capital gains, a ban written into the Florida Constitution. Computed from the official California Franchise Tax Board schedule, single filer, on taxable income before credits:
| Taxable income (single) | California income tax | Florida income tax | You keep per year |
|---|---|---|---|
| US$100,000 | US$5,739 | US$0 | US$5,739 |
| US$150,000 | US$10,389 | US$0 | US$10,389 |
| US$200,000 | US$15,039 | US$0 | US$15,039 |
| US$300,000 | US$24,339 | US$0 | US$24,339 |
| US$500,000 | US$44,766 | US$0 | US$44,766 |
Two California details widen the gap beyond the table. First, California gives capital gains no break: a gain is taxed as ordinary income, so selling stock, a business or crypto after establishing Florida residency can save five figures on a single event — and selling before you leave hands the whole gain to California. Second, California employees also carry a state payroll deduction that Florida workers simply do not have. People are already doing this math: 11,076 Californians switched their driver’s licenses to Florida in the first half of 2026 alone, making California the #4 origin state, and Census data show 661,205 people left California for another state in 2024 — more than any other state lost. Miami-Dade is the #1 destination county in Florida.
Cost of living in Miami vs. California: it depends which California
San Francisco: the move pays twice. San Francisco’s median one-bedroom hit US$4,400 in fall 2026, up 25.4% in a year, against a Miami median of US$2,500 (two-bedroom US$3,230). That is US$1,900 a month — US$22,800 a year — before the tax line. Stack the two and a US$150,000 earner is roughly US$33,000 a year ahead.
Los Angeles: the move pays once. Zillow’s median listed rent for January–August 2026 puts Los Angeles at US$2,748 and the Miami metro at US$2,600 — US$148 a month apart. San Diego lists at US$2,830. If you rent in LA today, do not budget a rent windfall in Miami; budget the tax saving, the gas saving (about US$1,109 a year at 12,000 miles and 25 mpg, on the US$6.39 vs. US$4.08 gallon), and a modest sales-tax edge: California’s average combined rate is 8.99% against 7% in Miami-Dade, worth about US$398 a year on US$20,000 of taxable purchases.
Owners: read this before you celebrate. California’s effective property tax rate on owner-occupied homes is just 0.70%, and Proposition 13 freezes long-held assessments — a house bought in California years ago can carry a tax bill Florida will not match. Florida owners get the homestead exemption and the 3% Save Our Homes cap, but they also face homeowners insurance averaging US$8,471 a year, the highest in the United States. If your California property tax is low because you bought long ago, your housing-carry line can get worse in Florida even as your income-tax line goes to zero. This is exactly why our standing advice on this corridor is rent first, model the buy in year two. What actually changes, line by line
The drive changes completely. Los Angeles to Miami is roughly 2,733 miles. Full-service movers on the California-to-Florida route averaged US$5,100 in August 2026 industry data (range US$1,475–US$13,245 across 375 moves); a rental truck averaged US$2,000 and a container US$2,950. Your goods travel for days, not hours — plan a bridge week with essentials, and never let the truck carry documents, medication or the first week’s work gear.
The tax calendar changes. In the move year you file a California part-year return (Form 540NR) and split your income at the move date. After that, California can still tax California-source income — a rental property you kept, a California business, deferred compensation earned from California workdays. Florida files nothing.
The clock changes. Florida residency is triggered by starting a job, enrolling kids in Florida public schools, registering to vote, filing for homestead, or living here more than six consecutive months. From the first trigger: vehicle title and registration, with Florida insurance, within 10 days, and your Florida driver’s license within 30 days. If you buy and live in the home on January 1, file homestead by March 1. What most people don’t know
1. California’s safe harbor will not save most movers — and they plan around the wrong rule. The famous 546-day safe harbor applies only if you are outside California under an employment-related contract for at least 546 consecutive days, keep return visits to 45 days a year or less, and stay under US$200,000 of intangible income. A normal relocation to Miami does not qualify. Everyone else is judged on facts and circumstances — the Franchise Tax Board weighs your closest connections: where your home, family, bank accounts, doctors, cars and belongings are. So the work is not counting days; it is moving the center of your life, in writing, and being able to prove it.
2. There is no California exit tax — the risk is an audit years later. California does not charge you to leave. What it does is audit high-income departures, sometimes long after the move, and the burden of proof sits with you. Keep the dated paper trail from day one: Florida lease or closing, license surrender, voter registration, utility accounts, and the move-date split on your part-year return. A clean file closes an audit; a nostalgic one — California club memberships, a kept apartment, a car left behind — reopens it.
3. The nine-month presumption cuts the other way on your visits back. Spend more than nine months in California in a tax year and you are presumed a resident. Few full-time movers trip it, but slow movers do: if you “move” in October and drift back for long California stretches the next year, your own calendar becomes the state’s evidence.
4. Timing a stock or business sale around the move is worth more than a year of rent. Because California taxes capital gains at full ordinary rates with no preference, the difference between closing a sale as a California resident and closing it as an established Florida resident can reach 13.3% of the gain. Sequence the residency break before the liquidity event, with professional advice — this single decision is the highest-value item on the entire California-to-Miami checklist, and it is irreversible once the sale closes.
Frequently asked questions
How much do I save moving from California to Miami?
On income tax alone, about US$10,389 a year at US$150,000 of taxable income and US$24,339 at US$300,000 (single filer, official California schedule). Add about US$1,109 a year on gas at typical mileage. Rent decides the rest: San Francisco movers save roughly US$22,800 a year on a one-bedroom; Los Angeles movers save almost nothing on rent — US$2,748 vs. US$2,600 median listed — so their win is the tax line.
Is Miami actually cheaper than Los Angeles?
On rent, barely. On taxes and fuel, clearly. The honest cost of living in Miami vs. Los Angeles answer is that a renter earning US$150,000 keeps five figures more a year in Miami, almost all of it from the state income tax going to zero — while a San Francisco renter wins on rent and taxes at once, and a long-time California homeowner may pay more to carry a Florida house once insurance is counted.
How much does it cost to move from California to Florida?
Full-service movers averaged US$5,100 in August 2026 route data, with a wide US$1,475–US$13,245 range by home size; rental trucks averaged US$2,000 and containers US$2,950. Add first month, deposit and setup in Miami, plus a bridge week while your shipment crosses roughly 2,733 miles.
Does California tax me after I move to Miami?
For the move year, yes — you file a part-year return (Form 540NR) splitting income at the move date. After a genuine domicile break, California taxes only California-source income: rentals, California business income, or deferred pay from California workdays. There is no exit tax, but the Franchise Tax Board audits departures, and the safe harbor most people cite does not cover a normal move. This article is general information, not tax or legal advice; confirm your sequence with a tax professional before a home or stock sale.
