Short answer: If you are moving to Miami with school-age kids, here is the fact most relocation timelines get wrong: your zoned Miami-Dade public school has no enrollment deadline to miss — you register when you arrive, at the school assigned to your actual address. What you can collide with is the grading calendar. In 2026-2027 the clean mid-year entry points are October 19, 2026 (second grading period), January 19, 2027 (third grading period and a brand-new semester — the single best mid-year date) and March 30, 2027 (fourth grading period). The expensive version of the literal question — families moving mid-school-year: enrollment timing in Miami-Dade — is landing in the two weeks before a period closes: a child who starts on January 4 attends only 9 school days before the semester ends on January 14, and gets graded on a semester they never lived. Time the move to a boundary, and the same cost of living in Miami buys your child a full, clean grading period from day one.

Moving to Miami mid-year: the 2026-2027 enrollment windows, dated
Miami-Dade County Public Schools runs 2026-2027 from August 13, 2026 to June 3, 2027, in four grading periods. A mid-year move is not one decision — it is a choice among these dates:
| Entry point | Date | What your child gets |
|---|---|---|
| Second grading period begins | Monday, October 19, 2026 | A full grading period, graded only on work done in Miami |
| Third grading period + second semester begins | Tuesday, January 19, 2027 | The cleanest slate of the year: new period, new semester, full semester credits for high schoolers |
| Fourth grading period begins | Tuesday, March 30, 2027 | A full final period — and spring recess (March 22-26) is a free moving week right before it |
| Danger window: period closing | Oct 5-16, 2026 · Jan 4-14, 2027 · Mar 8-19, 2027 | 9-10 school days attended, then the period closes and grades are issued on that sliver |
Notice what the danger window really costs. It is not a fine or a fee — it is your child’s transcript. An elementary student gets a report card built on days, not months, of observed work. A high schooler risks something harder to undo: courses evaluated one by one instead of a clean semester transfer, right when semester credits are being closed on January 14. If your move date is flexible by even two weeks, spend that flexibility here, not on the flight.
And if the date is not flexible? Enroll anyway, the week you land. Florida law (§1003.21) requires children from age 6 through 16 to attend school for the entire school term — a compulsory-age child who has moved to Florida cannot legally sit out the rest of the year while the family “settles in.” Kindergarten runs on its own date: a child must be 5 years old on or before September 1 of the school year to be eligible.
The deadline that does exist: magnet is October 1 to January 15
There is exactly one hard deadline in this system, and it is not your neighborhood school. Magnet programs — 350+ programs in 121 schools for 2026-2027 — accept applications only from October 1 through January 15, through the M-DCPS Parent Portal. You may select up to five schools, one program per school, and results arrive on March 15.
So a family landing in February has not “missed school enrollment.” They have missed the magnet lottery for that year. The fallback, in order: enroll immediately in the zoned school your address assigns; ask the district’s Choice office about seats still open at select magnet schools after January 15 (the district states some remain); and calendar October 1 for the next cycle. This is also why the address decision comes first — among the best neighborhoods in Miami for your family, the one that matters is the one whose zoned school you would be happy with if no magnet seat ever opens. My zone-by-zone breakdown in the best public school zones in Miami-Dade to rent in before you buy is built exactly for that decision.
The lease is the enrollment document nobody treats as one. Because the school follows the address, signing in the wrong zone to save a few hundred dollars a month can cost a school change mid-year — and the move-in cash itself is worth reading before you sign: how security deposits in Miami really work sets out what landlords can actually charge you at signing.
What most people don’t know
1. Your child’s shot record from another state or country is not yet a Florida document. Florida requires immunizations certified on Form DH 680 — and only a Florida-licensed physician, an advanced practice registered nurse, or the county health department can issue it, after entering your child’s history into the Florida SHOTS registry. The Florida Department of Health’s own advice: get the complete immunization history before you leave your current home. Book the Florida appointment for your first week, records in hand, or this form — not the school — becomes your delay.
2. The health exam has a 12-month clock, and seventh grade has a hidden shot. Under §1003.22, the school-entry health exam (Form DH3040) must have been performed within 1 year before enrollment; a district may allow up to 30 school days to present it, but that grace is a policy choice, not a guarantee to plan around. Separately, any student entering, attending or transferring into seventh grade in Florida needs a Tdap dose on top of everything else — the single most common mid-year paperwork surprise I see.
3. Miami-Dade asks for TWO proofs of address, and your lease is only one of them. Initial registration under district Policy 5112 requires an original birth certificate or other verification of age and legal name, the physical exam with tuberculosis screening, the immunization certificate — and two verifications of the parent’s current residence. Families land with a signed lease and nothing else in their name. A utility bill or connection order in the parent’s name at the new address closes the pair; arrange it before registration day.
4. Landing in a hotel or on a relative’s couch can be a legal fast lane, not a barrier. If your family lacks a fixed, regular and adequate nighttime residence — doubled up with relatives or in a hotel because of hardship — the federal McKinney-Vento Act requires immediate enrollment, even without the usual documents and even if you missed deadlines. Miami-Dade’s office for students in unstable housing is Project UP-START (305-995-7558). Ask before you accept any “come back when you have an address.” And note the baseline rule for everyone: entry requirements are the same regardless of country of birth or immigration status (Policy 5114) — the seasonal families in the Canadian snowbird guide to a Miami winter meet the same registrar, with the same list.
5. Carry the records yourself. Nothing in this process moves faster than paper in your hand. Bring the last report card and, for high schoolers, an official transcript, in a folder, on registration day — and get the counselor’s credit evaluation in writing before the semester closes, not after. The mid-year landing checklist, in order
Choose the zone before the home — the address assigns the school; pick the zoned school you can live with, then house-hunt inside it.
Land on a boundary — January 19, 2027 if you can; October 19 or March 30 if you cannot; avoid the two weeks before any period closes.
Before you leave home: complete immunization history, birth certificate, last report card or transcript, and a health exam dated within the last 12 months.
Your first week in Miami: convert the shot record to a DH 680 with a Florida provider or the county health department, add the seventh-grade Tdap if it applies, and line up your second proof of address.
Registration day: register at the zoned school, hand over records in person, and — for high schoolers — leave with the credit evaluation in writing.
Frequently asked questions
Can my child enroll in a Miami-Dade public school in the middle of the year?
Yes. Your zoned school — the one assigned to your actual address — enrolls new residents when they arrive; there is no application deadline for it. Bring verification of age and legal name, the health exam and immunization certificate, and two proofs of the parent’s current residence. The dated deadline in the district, October 1 to January 15, applies only to magnet program applications.
What is the best month to move to Miami with school-age kids?
Against the 2026-2027 calendar, the best mid-year landing is the week of January 19, 2027: winter recess and the semester break absorb the move, and your child starts a new grading period and a new semester on the same morning. Runners-up are October 19, 2026 and March 30, 2027, when grading periods turn over. The weeks to avoid are the ones right before a period closes — October 5-16, January 4-14 and March 8-19 — when a child is graded on 9-10 days of attendance.
We missed the January 15 magnet deadline. What now?
Enroll in your zoned school immediately — that right does not expire. Then ask the district’s Choice office about magnet seats still available at select schools after the main cycle, and apply in the next October 1 to January 15 window for the following year. Accepting a zoned seat never blocks a later magnet application.
My child does not have Florida health paperwork yet. Will the school turn us away?
The health exam must be dated within 1 year of enrollment (§1003.22), and immunizations must be certified on the Florida DH 680 form, which only a Florida provider or the county health department can issue from your child’s records — so bring the full immunization history from home and book that appointment for your first week. If your family is in temporary housing — a hotel, or doubled up with relatives — McKinney-Vento requires immediate enrollment even without documents; contact Project UP-START at 305-995-7558.
