Short answer: If you are moving to Miami on a travel contract, your tax home is the city or general area of your main place of business — and if you have no regular workplace, it is the home you genuinely keep, pay for, and return to. That one answer decides whether the stipend part of your package can be paid tax-free at all. On an average Miami package of US$2,371 a week (Vivian, October 23, 2026, 654 jobs), a typical stipend slice of US$1,400 a week puts US$18,200 of a single 13-week contract at stake — which is why the literal question, travel nurse tax home: what it is and why Miami contracts ask about it, appears on the agency’s forms before anyone asks which neighborhood you want. Fail the tax home test and those stipends are wages: at a 22% federal marginal rate plus 7.65% Social Security and Medicare, the reclassification costs about US$5,396 over the contract. Your tax home is the cheapest line in the cost of living in Miami math — and the easiest one to lose by accident.

Moving to Miami: what a travel nurse tax home actually is
The Internal Revenue Service defines it in Publication 463, and the definition surprises most nurses: a tax home is not a house. It is an area.
| Your situation | Where your tax home is | What it means for a Miami contract |
|---|---|---|
| You have a regular or main place of business | That city or general area, regardless of where your family lives | You are travelling away from home in Miami, so housing and meals stipends can be paid tax-free under an accountable plan, capped at the federal per diem for Miami-Dade. |
| You have no regular workplace — the classic travel nurse | The home you regularly live in, IF you pass a three-factor test (below) | Pass all three factors and the home counts. Pass only one and you are an itinerant: your tax home is wherever you happen to be working, which in Miami means Miami — and nothing is tax-free. |
| Your Miami work is expected to last more than 12 months | Miami itself — the assignment is indefinite, not temporary | From the day the expectation passes one year, living-expense amounts must be included in your income even if the agency still calls them travel allowances. |
The three factors for nurses with no regular workplace, in the IRS’s own framework: you do some work in the area of the home and use it for lodging while working there; you have living expenses at that home that are duplicated because the job takes you away; and you have not abandoned the area — family lives there, or you often return and use it for lodging.
All three factors: you have a tax home. Two: it depends on all the facts and circumstances. One: you are an itinerant, and an itinerant is never away from home, so there is nothing to reimburse tax-free. Compare that with how the same stipend question played out in taxed vs. tax-free travel nurse stipends in Miami contracts — this guide is the layer underneath it: whether you qualify at all.
What most people don’t know
1. The agency asks because its own payroll is on the line, not out of curiosity. Tax-free stipends only exist inside an accountable plan — the Treasury rules at 26 CFR 1.62-2 require a business connection, substantiation, and the return of anything paid above substantiated expenses. Paying at or below the federal per diem rate counts as substantiated under Revenue Procedure 2019-48, which is why your stipend is capped at the Miami GSA ceiling: US$1,701 a week in the low season (lodging US$151 a night plus US$92 a day for meals and incidentals) and US$2,352 a week in February and March. Anything above the locality rate is wages on the spot. Your signed tax-home declaration is the first page of the agency’s compliance file.
2. One factor does almost all the work: duplicated expenses. Rent or a mortgage you keep paying at the tax home while you also pay for Miami housing is the proof the whole structure stands on. Give up the apartment back home to save money and you have usually saved the smaller bill and lost the bigger one — in the worked example here, roughly US$5,396 of extra federal tax and payroll tax on one contract. The move-in money you control matters the same way on the Miami end, as how security deposits work in Miami shows: Florida sets no state cap on deposits under section 83.49, so an unproven tax home plus a non-refundable Miami lease is a double exposure.
3. Paying family only works at fair-market rent, in writing, with proof. A parent’s address used for mail, or a token payment with no lease and no bank trail, is the classic failed file. The IRS factors ask for real duplicated expenses: a written agreement at a market rent for the area, payments you can show, and a home you actually return to and use. If the arrangement would look invented to an auditor, it will look invented to an auditor.
4. The 12-month clock runs on the metro, not on the contract. A 13-week contract is safely temporary. The trap is the chain: extensions and back-to-back contracts in the same general area that together pass a year can be treated as one indefinite assignment, and if the expectation changes mid-assignment, tax-free treatment stops from the date the expectation changes. Short breaks do not reliably reset the clock — the IRS has disregarded a break of about a month in private letter rulings, and those rulings bind only the taxpayer who received them. Plan the year, not the contract.
5. Your tax home is not your driver’s licence, your mailing address, or your state of residence. Florida having no state income tax does not rescue a failed tax home either: the reclassification modelled here is federal, and a nurse whose tax home sits in a state with an income tax may owe that state as well. Winter demand from the north — the same pressure mapped in the Canadian snowbird guide to a Miami winter — pushes Miami furnished rents up exactly when most contracts start, which is why the tax answer has to be settled before the housing signature, not after. How SETTLE orders it: proof first, housing second
Step 1 — Score yourself against the three factors honestly. Work near the home between contracts, duplicated expenses you can document, and a home you have not abandoned. Two factors is a grey zone: that is a conversation with a travel-tax specialist before you sign, not a guess on a form.
Step 2 — Paper the tax home before you shop for Miami. Keep the lease or mortgage, the payment records, and — if family is involved — the written fair-market agreement. This file is worth more than any single housing discount: it defends US$18,200 of stipends per contract in the average-package example.
Step 3 — Count your Miami months before you extend. Put every contract and extension in the Miami area on one calendar. If the total is heading past 12 months, the tax treatment changes mid-stream, and the housing you sign should change with it.
Step 4 — Size the Miami lease to a stipend that survives scrutiny. A furnished unit near the hospital district at the series benchmark of about US$2,100 a month fits inside a US$1,400-a-week stipend with room to spare. A lease signed on the assumption of a tax-free package you cannot prove is the expensive version of the same apartment — and it shapes which of the best neighborhoods in Miami are actually affordable to you.
Step 5 — If you have no tax home, say so and take the taxed deal. A fully taxed local-style package is an honest number you can budget. A tax-free package built on a declaration you cannot support is a bill that arrives later, with interest.
Frequently asked questions
What is a travel nurse tax home, in one sentence?
It is the city or general area of your main place of business — or, if you have no regular workplace, the home you keep paying for, have not abandoned, and return to — and it is the place you must be travelling away from for housing and meals stipends to be tax-free.
Why does every Miami contract ask about my tax home before housing?
Because the answer decides how the agency may legally pay you. Inside an accountable plan, stipends at or below the Miami per diem ceiling — US$1,701 a week in low season, US$2,352 in February and March — can be excluded from your wages. Without a tax home there is no away-from-home expense to reimburse, so the same money must run as taxable wages.
Can I use my parents’ home as my tax home?
Only if it passes the same test as any other home: you do some work in that area, you carry real duplicated living expenses there — a written agreement at fair-market rent with proof of payment is the defensible version — and you have not abandoned it, returning and using it for lodging. A mailing address alone satisfies none of the three factors on its own.
What happens if I stay in Miami past 12 months?
The assignment stops being temporary. Once your work in the same area is realistically expected to last more than a year — including through extensions and chained contracts — Miami becomes your tax home, amounts you receive for living expenses go into your income, and the housing math should be rebuilt on a taxed package.
