Short answer: if you are moving to Miami on a 13-week contract and thinking of bringing your car, the parking math depends on the hospital, not the city. At Jackson Memorial, parking at the visitor daily maximum is US$11 a shift — US$429 over 39 shifts — and a furnished unit in Brickell or Downtown adds US$110–200 a month for your space at home, so the car can cost about US$1,128 over the contract before tolls. At Nicklaus Children’s and Baptist Hospital in Kendall, hospital parking is free, and the same car costs about US$296 in driving costs if your housing includes its space. And Jackson is the one campus Metrorail serves directly: leaving the car behind costs US$337.50 in monthly passes for the whole contract. I run this math with every nurse I relocate, because the car decision is really a hospital-and-neighborhood decision.

Travel nurses bringing a car to Miami: parking costs near hospitals
The literal question — travel nurses bringing a car to Miami, parking costs near hospitals — hides two separate bills. You pay to park the car where you sleep, and you pay again to park it where you work. In some Miami hospital neighborhoods both bills are zero. At the medical campus in the middle of the city, they stack up to roughly half a week of average Miami travel nurse pay (US$2,306 a week, Vivian, October 15, 2026). This is the breakdown I use when we decide, before you sign a lease, whether the car comes or stays.
| Hospital | Published parking cost | What a 12-hour shift costs you |
|---|---|---|
| Jackson Memorial (medical campus) | 5 garages, 7,000+ spaces, 24/7. Patients and visitors: first 2 hours free, then rising to a US$11 maximum per 24 hours | US$11 at the visitor rate — US$429 over 39 shifts |
| UHealth / Sylvester (same medical campus) | Clinical Research Building garage US$4 a day with the free shuttle; valet US$8 a day for patients and family, US$20 a day for non-patients | US$4–20 depending on which category the facility puts agency staff in — confirm before day one |
| Nicklaus Children’s Hospital | Three garages (blue, green, yellow) whose use is complimentary, plus complimentary 24-hour valet | US$0 |
| Baptist Hospital of Miami (Kendall) | Visitor garages and lots listed as free, all day | US$0 |
| Mount Sinai Medical Center (Miami Beach) | Surface lots listed at about US$5 per 2 hours; no published free scheme | Priced per visit — ask the facility for the daily cap in writing |
Read that table carefully, because it contains the trap: the Jackson and UHealth prices above are patient and visitor prices. They are the ceiling you pay if nobody sorts out your staff parking — not a quote for what agency nurses are charged once the facility assigns them a garage or permit. More on that below, because it is the first thing I tell nurses to confirm.
The second parking bill: where you live in Miami
Hospital parking is only half the cost of living in Miami with a car. The other half is charged by your housing, and it splits by neighborhood. In Brickell and Downtown — the best neighborhoods in Miami for a car-free contract, and the most expensive for a car — monthly parking averages about US$110 a month in public garages, runs US$154 a month at the Lanier garages near Brickell, and reaches US$200 a month for monthly valet in a Brickell Bay building, plus a one-time US$30 parking-pass registration fee. Over a 13-week contract that is US$330–600 just to keep the car at home. Furnished Finder and Airbnb hosts in those towers often list the rent and price the space separately, so the unit that looked US$150 cheaper can be the more expensive one once the space is added.
In Kendall, Westchester, Doral and the other suburban areas near Nicklaus Children’s and Baptist, parking is usually a surface space or a driveway rather than a garage line item — but “usually” is not a lease term. Before you sign, get two answers in writing: is one space included in the rent, and is there a registration or second-car fee? The same discipline protects the rest of your money: our guide to security deposits in Miami explains how much landlords can charge and when Florida law forces them to give it back, and parking fees and registrations belong in that same written picture. If your contract runs through winter, remember you are also competing for garages and furnished units with seasonal visitors — our Canadian snowbird guide to a Miami winter shows why December to March tightens everything near the hospitals.
Moving to Miami with a car: the full 13-week math
Here is the comparison I build for a standard contract — 13 weeks, three 12-hour shifts a week, 39 shifts — using published parking prices and the IRS standard mileage rate for the second half of 2026 (76 cents a mile) as the full cost of driving: fuel, wear and depreciation together. Florida gasoline averaged US$4.23 a gallon on October 15, 2026 (AAA), so fuel alone is the small part of that rate — on a short commute it is roughly US$53–66 for the whole contract.
| 13-week scenario | Hospital parking | Housing parking | Driving (full cost) | Total |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| A. Jackson Memorial + furnished unit in Brickell, car brought | US$429 (39 × US$11 visitor maximum) | US$462 (US$154 × 3 months) | US$237 (about 8 miles round trip × 39 shifts × US$0.76) | About US$1,128 |
| B. Nicklaus Children’s + Kendall housing with space included, car brought | US$0 (complimentary garages) | US$0 (included — confirm in the lease) | US$296 (about 10 miles round trip × 39 × US$0.76) | About US$296 |
| C. Jackson Memorial, no car — live near a Metrorail station | — | — | US$337.50 (monthly pass US$112.50 × 3) | US$337.50 |
Two lessons fall out of that table. First, the same car costs about US$832 more on a Jackson-plus-Brickell contract than on a Nicklaus-plus-Kendall one — the hospital and the neighborhood set the price, not the car. Second, at Jackson the no-car option is not a sacrifice play: the Civic Center Metrorail station serves the medical campus directly, the monthly pass is US$112.50, station parking is US$4.50 a day or US$11.25 a month with a pass if you ever need park-and-ride, and the downtown Metromover is free. Leaving the car behind on that contract saves roughly US$790 against Scenario A. Where you live decides whether that works — my guide to short-term leases near Jackson Memorial for a 13-week contract walks through the neighborhoods that put you on that rail line, and the full SETTLE guides to moving to Miami and the best neighborhoods in Miami cover the wider map.
What most people don’t know
Visitor rates are not staff rates — and nobody publishes the staff rate. The US$11 Jackson maximum and the UHealth prices above are what patients and visitors pay. As agency staff you may be assigned a specific garage, a permit, or a category in between (at UHealth the gap between the US$8 patient valet and the US$20 non-patient valet shows how much the category matters). Ask your agency and the facility’s parking office, in writing, before your first shift: which garage, what price, what permit. Showing up on day one and feeding the visitor gate for 13 weeks is the most expensive way to learn.
Jackson’s extended-stay parking program is not for you. The medical campus runs a discounted extended-stay parking arrangement — for family members and caretakers of patients expected to stay a long time. It does not apply to staff, and it will not rescue a nurse who assumed it would.
Toll-by-Plate costs double — and your out-of-state plate will be billed. Miami’s SR-836 Dolphin Expressway is all-electronic. A full-length trip was posted at US$2.26 with SunPass and US$4.52 by Toll-by-Plate. If your commute uses the expressways daily, budget up to about US$4.52 a day round trip with SunPass (about US$176 over 39 shifts) — and get a SunPass transponder in your first week instead of paying double for the same road.
The car also changes which housing is cheap. Without a car, your search radius collapses to the rail corridor and the hospital’s immediate area, where furnished units price at a premium. With a car, Kendall, Westchester and Doral open up — often several hundred dollars a month cheaper for more space. On suburban contracts the car can pay for itself out of the rent difference; on a Jackson contract with Brickell housing, it almost never does. Run both numbers together, never the parking alone.
Tell your insurer where the car will sleep. A 13-week work stay means the car is garaged in Miami-Dade, not at your home address, and insurers price by garaging location. A short call before you drive down keeps the policy honest for the whole contract — and check Florida’s registration rules for work stays at the same time, rather than assuming your home-state plates settle every question for 13 weeks.
Frequently asked questions
How much does parking cost per shift at Jackson Memorial for a travel nurse?
At the published patient and visitor rates, a 12-hour shift reaches the US$11 daily maximum (the first 2 hours are free, then the rate rises through the day). Over 39 shifts that is US$429. That is the worst case, not a staff quote: confirm your agency-staff parking category, garage and any permit price with the facility before your first shift, because staff arrangements are not published.
Which Miami hospitals have free parking for travel nurses?
On published information, Nicklaus Children’s Hospital’s three garages are complimentary (with complimentary valet), and Baptist Hospital of Miami in Kendall lists its visitor parking as free all day. At the Jackson/UHealth medical campus, parking is priced — US$4 a day at the Clinical Research Building garage with its shuttle, up to US$11 a day at Jackson’s visitor maximum — which is why the hospital on your contract decides whether bringing the car makes sense.
How much does apartment parking add to the cost of living in Miami on a 13-week contract?
In Brickell and Downtown, about US$110–200 a month — US$330–600 over the contract — plus sometimes a one-time registration fee (one Brickell Bay building charges US$30). In suburban areas near Nicklaus Children’s and Baptist, a space is often included in the rent, but get that in writing: an “included” space that turns out to cost US$75 a month quietly adds US$225 to your contract.
Is it cheaper to skip the car entirely on a Miami contract?
It depends on the hospital. For a Jackson Memorial contract, yes: a Metrorail monthly pass is US$112.50, the whole 13 weeks cost US$337.50, and the campus has its own station — roughly US$790 less than bringing the car and parking it at home and at the hospital. For a Kendall or Westchester contract at a free-parking hospital, the car costs only its driving — about US$296 in full costs over the contract — and buys you cheaper, larger housing options, so it usually earns its keep.
