Short answer: Doral vs. Weston: schools, housing and commute compared — for families moving to Miami, Weston wins schools on paper and Doral wins daily life if you work in Miami. In Weston, the address itself assigns your children to a public pipeline that stays strong from elementary to high school: Eagle Point Elementary rates 10 out of 10 on GreatSchools, and Cypress Bay High School rates Niche A+ with an average SAT near 1260. In Doral, the strongest high school — Doral Academy Preparatory, also Niche A+ with an SAT near 1260 — is a charter you enter by application and lottery, while the zoned public high school rates B+ on Niche and 4 out of 10 on GreatSchools. On housing, a 2-bedroom averages $2,790 in Doral vs. $2,600 in Weston, but Weston’s overall average rent is higher ($3,800 vs. $3,150, Zumper, October 10, 2026) because most of its rentals are houses, not apartments. And the commute decides for many families: Doral sits about 7.5 road miles from Miami International Airport; Weston sits about 38 driving miles from Miami — but only about 20 miles from Fort Lauderdale’s airport.

Moving to Miami: Doral vs. Weston in numbers (2026)

Schools: in Weston the address is the strategy, in Doral the lottery is
Weston is one of the few places in South Florida where a family moving to Miami can buy or rent an ordinary address and get a strong public school at every level. Eagle Point Elementary posts math proficiency near 86% and reading near 83% in the data surfaced this month. Falcon Cove Middle School rates 9 out of 10 on GreatSchools. Cypress Bay High School — Weston’s zoned high school — combines a Niche grade of A+, an average SAT near 1260 and a graduation rate near 98%. There is one honest caveat: Cypress Bay is enormous, with enrollment in the mid-four-thousands, so your teenager gets a strong school and a very large one at the same time.
Doral’s school map works differently. Its peak is just as high — Doral Academy Preparatory is a charter high school with a Niche grade of A+, math proficiency near 79% and reading near 84% — and several Doral charter elementaries rate 9 or 10 out of 10. But none of that is assigned by your address: charter seats are won through application and, when demand exceeds supply, a lottery. The school a Doral address actually guarantees, Ronald W. Reagan/Doral Senior High, is the weakest link in this whole comparison, with test proficiency well below both Doral Academy and Cypress Bay. So in Doral you are not choosing a school zone; you are entering a lottery and keeping the zoned school as your backup. Families comparing areas across the region will find both cities in context in our guide to the best neighborhoods in Miami for relocating families.
Housing and the cost of living in Miami: apartments in Doral, houses in Weston
The cost of living in Miami reads backwards in these two cities until you separate apartments from houses. Weston’s 2-bedrooms average about $190 a month less than Doral’s, and its apartment average is lower too — $2,411 vs. $2,730. Yet Weston’s overall average rent is $650 a month higher, because Weston barely has apartment stock: most families who rent there rent a house, at house prices, and the citywide figure reflects that mix. Doral, by contrast, has deep apartment and townhouse inventory, which makes it the easier landing city for a first lease while you learn the region. Buying widens the gap: Weston’s median listing sits near $785,250 against Doral’s $560,000, a premium of roughly $225,000 for the master-planned Broward package. Either way, budget the deposit on top of the first month — Florida sets no cap on it, and our security deposits in Miami guide explains how to protect it. If you are testing South Florida with a first winter before committing, the seasonal math in our winter rental guide for Miami is a useful companion, and the full SETTLE relocation guides hub covers the rest of the arrival checklist.
The commute: the number that quietly decides this
Doral was built next to work: Miami International Airport is about 7.5 road miles away, roughly 13 minutes by car in light traffic, and the airport corridor, Coral Gables and Brickell are all Miami-Dade trips. A parent working in any of those places keeps a short daily drive and gains back an hour a day against Weston. Weston trades that away deliberately: it is about 38 driving miles from Miami, and even the airport run that is short for Weston families is the other airport — Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International, about 20 miles and 27 minutes. If your job, your clients and your life are in Fort Lauderdale, western Broward or fully remote, Weston’s distance costs you almost nothing. If they are in Miami, you will pay for those A-rated schools in traffic, every single weekday, for years.
What most people don’t know
Weston is not in Miami — or even in Miami’s county. It is a Broward County city. That changes your school district, your county services and your default airport. Families who say they are moving to Miami and land in Weston have really chosen the Fort Lauderdale side of the region; that is a good choice only if it is a conscious one.
Doral’s famous school is not a school zone. Doral Academy’s results are real, but the seat is a lottery outcome, not a property feature. Never pay a rent or price premium “for Doral Academy” — pay it, if anything, for a home whose zoned backup school you would also accept.
Cypress Bay’s size is part of the deal. With enrollment in the mid-four-thousands, Cypress Bay offers unusual course depth and strong averages, but a shy teenager can get lost in it. Visit at dismissal time before you decide the school’s rating settles the question.
Weston’s low apartment average is a scarcity statistic. There are few apartments to average. A family that needs a house in Weston should budget from the $3,800 city figure and the $3,772 3-bedroom average, not from the $2,411 apartment number.
Doral’s December is the soft signing month. Zumper’s seasonality for Doral puts the lowest rents in December and the least competition in September — useful timing leverage if your lease start is flexible.
Frequently asked questions
Which is better for families, Doral or Weston?
If guaranteed public schools K-12 matter most and your work is remote, in Broward or near Fort Lauderdale: Weston. If your work is in Miami-Dade — the airport corridor, Coral Gables, Brickell — and you accept entering the charter lottery with a zoned backup: Doral, for the commute you will make thousands of times.
How much does a family rental cost in each city in 2026?
Zumper (October 10, 2026): a 2-bedroom averages $2,790 in Doral and $2,600 in Weston; a 3-bedroom averages $3,550 in Doral and $3,772 in Weston. Weston’s overall average is higher ($3,800 vs. $3,150) because most of its rentals are houses.
Are Doral schools as good as Weston’s?
At the peak, yes: Doral Academy Preparatory matches Cypress Bay’s headline numbers (both Niche A+, SAT near 1260). The difference is access: Cypress Bay is assigned by Weston address, Doral Academy is a charter entered by application and lottery, and Doral’s zoned high school rates well below both.
How far is each city from the airport and from Miami?
Doral is about 7.5 road miles from Miami International Airport, around 13 minutes by car in light traffic. Weston is about 20 miles from Fort Lauderdale’s airport (around 27 minutes) and about 38 driving miles from Miami — the daily gap that decides this comparison for Miami-based parents.
